INTRODUCING

In Japan, the Tsuru is said to live for a thousand years.

A bird that chooses one mate for life. Long regarded as a symbol of longevity, fidelity and good fortune.

We chose to honour it with needle and thread.

Cut from 180gsm black cotton twill, the Crane Shirt takes its cues from the embroidered souvenir shirts that emerged from post-war Japan. Relaxed through the body with a revere collar and turn-back sleeves, it sits with just enough weight to hold its shape, whether worn buttoned to the neck or left open.

Across the chest, two Tsuru cranes face one another, embroidered in satin stitch. Approximately 22,000 stitches form each bird, catching the light as they rise from the cloth. Wings held mid-beat. Necks arched. A moment of stillness, captured in thread.

Finished with Corozo buttons, patch pockets and our ROGUE label, this is a shirt that rewards a closer look. One you'll wear for years, and one that will only become more yours with time.

ORIGINS

The embroidered souvenir shirt has its roots in Yokosuka, Japan, in the years following the Second World War.

American servicemen stationed at the naval base wanted something to take home. Local embroiderers, many from the traditional kimono trade, adapted their craft to shirts and jackets instead.

Working with treadle machines, they stitched familiar Eastern motifs across the cloth. Dragons. Tigers. Koi. Cranes.

The garments became known as Sukajan — Suka, from Yokosuka, and jan, Japanese slang for jacket.

What began as a souvenir became a symbol in its own right. Collected, worn and reinterpreted ever since.
