A Year of Enduring Style: The Wear-Test Guide to Timeless Clothing
Written By Olaus McLeod
Well, here we are, settling into my year-long &SONS capsule wardrobe trial, and I’m already feeling a significant shift in my daily routine. My goal for this year is to truly experience the practical side of a limited, high-quality wardrobe, and so far, it’s proving to be an absolute revelation.
First Impressions: Comfort, Fit, and Quality
From the moment I pulled on the first piece, the comfort was undeniable. Everything feels incredibly soft against the skin, and the fabrics have a substantial, high-quality feel without being overly heavy.
The fit across the board is spot on – not too tight, not too loose, just a comfortable, flattering cut that moves with you.
And speaking of quality, it’s truly impressive. Each item, from the Boxer Pocket T-Shirts to the Carver Jacket, feels robust and well-made. There’s a noticeable attention to detail that assures me these pieces are built to last, which is exactly what you want from a capsule wardrobe designed for longevity.
Current Favourites (It’s Hard to Choose!)
While I genuinely love every piece in the collection, a few items have already emerged as firm favourites this first week:
- The Boxer Pocket T-Shirt in Black and Grey Marl are daily essentials. They're incredibly versatile and form the perfect foundation for so many outfits.
- The Breton Striped T-Shirt Blue adds a touch of classic style that I absolutely love.
- The Off Black Sweatshirt is the epitome of comfortable layering, perfect for those cooler mornings. It is an absolute workhorse and a go-to for me.
- The Carver Jacket Green is a standout – rugged yet stylish, and extremely adaptable. Dress it up, dress it down, it's always good to go.
- The Brandon Overdyed Jeans in Black Fade feel so tough and comfortable enough for all-day, every day wear.
- And finally, the Thompson Baker Boy Hat Grey Herringbone has quickly become another go-to accessory, adding character and style to any look.
The Simplicity of Daily Dressing
This is perhaps the biggest takeaway from week one. My previous wardrobe was a sprawling affair, full of too many items that rarely mixed and matched. It often led to decision fatigue and the feeling that I had "nothing to wear," despite owning a lot.
Now, it’s a completely different story. Everything in this &SONS capsule wardrobe is designed to complement everything else and, perhaps counter intuitively, I feel I have so many options of clothing combinations! This means that getting dressed in the morning takes virtually no thought. I just grab a few pieces, and boom, it all works together seamlessly.
The versatility and compatibility are a vast improvement, and I'm already saving precious time and mental energy. It’s liberating to know that whatever I choose, I’m going to feel comfortable, look well put together, and be appropriately dressed for the day.

One Consideration...
Not a criticism, just something to bear in mind. Given the quality and workwear heritage of &SONS clothing, their garments are often made from heavy duty fabrics. This in no way diminishes their softness, comfort and wearability. However, I have noticed that some of these garments take quite a while to dry, after washing.
Personally, I would choose that any day, over lighter weight, inferior alternatives. However, it's something you might like to factor into your wash cycle and wearing plans!
We’ll be following Olaus’ journey through the year, keeping up with his thoughts and experiences as he wears the pieces day in, day out. Stay tuned as we continue this exploration of enduring clothing, season by season, alongside Olaus’ honest and insightful wear-test.
