A New Adventure: Hiking The Pennine Way

In early May, our Founder, Phil James, is embarking on a new adventure to walk the Pennine Way, in two parts. The trail will take him from Edale to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, hiking for a week, this time for a special cause. His aim is to raise money for the charity Movember, which focuses on improving men's mental health and reducing the rate of male suicide.

Phil fell in love with the outdoors and its healing properties during his first trip to the Pennine Way at the age of 14. Now, 40 years later, he will be trading in his old plastic camera from his original trip for a trusty Leica to document his journey and share his thoughts and pictures as he goes. Through his walk, Phil hopes to inspire others to join him in supporting Movember and promoting the benefits of spending time in nature for mental well-being.

Part 1

“At the age of 14, I walked the Pennine Way as part of a school summer trip. I was blown away by the wonder of the countryside, the sense of space around me and the breathtaking views to photograph. It completely changed my teenage brain and outlook on life. I fell in love with the outdoors and its healing properties.

When I completed the walk, I swore I would return one day with a better camera. It’s taken a while to return…40 years later I am getting to experience it again, in two parts this time, the South and then the North. I’ll be heading off on this new adventure with a much older face but with the same sense of wonder I had in 1983.

My memories of my childhood trip are of endless time, the deafening silence, the sense of space and being able to think clearly. I have previously shared about my mental health struggles and I’m aware I need to spend time doing things that allow me to think and be inspired and healed by nature. This trip will help me do that in so many ways.

I will document my travels and share my thoughts and pictures, so maybe you could walk alongside me now and again. See you on the path…”
