McQueen x &SONS: Honouring a True Original

Some opportunities come along that feel bigger than just design or clothing - they feel like a chance to pay respect to someone who helped shape your path. That’s exactly what the McQueen x &SONS collaboration has meant to us.

Since we launched &SONS nine years ago, Steve McQueen has been a huge influence on what we do. His effortless style, quiet confidence, and refusal to follow trends have guided so many of the garments we’ve created.

For Phil, Steve has always been more than a style icon - he’s been a source of inspiration for how to live, how to carry yourself, and how to wear clothes in a way that feels natural.

The story of this collaboration started in the most unexpected way. A representative of the McQueen estate visited our Soho store, spent time with what we do, and saw something that resonated. He suggested we connect to explore the idea of working together.

To even be considered for something like this was an honour. From the first conversations, we knew we didn’t want to just create generic branded garments. Phil was passionate about doing more than that. If we were going to do this, it had to be about bringing Steve’s most iconic looks - both on screen and off - back to life in a way that felt true.

It would have been easy to sit with books, study images, and pull together designs from a distance. But that didn’t feel right. We wanted to get closer to the legacy. So we travelled to California and visited Steve’s family at their ranch. That’s where we met his grandson, Chase, for the first time.

Spending time with Chase was a turning point. His love for his grandfather’s name and his commitment to keeping the McQueen legacy alive was inspiring to see.

He spoke with pride, not about the fame, but about the man behind it. About Steve’s hard beginnings, his connection with Boys Republic - an organisation that helped him as a teenager - and how he stayed close to it throughout his life, without ever seeking praise or recognition. It was a reminder that the most meaningful legacies are built quietly, with purpose.

While we were there, we had the privilege of getting up close to some of Steve’s most cherished possessions - his Porsches, his Triumph motorcycles, and most importantly, his personal wardrobe.

We pored over original garments that had been part of his life, both on screen and in everyday moments. From well-worn denim to those signature knitwear pieces, we studied the details - the fit, the fabric, the way they’d aged. These weren’t just clothes. They were part of what made Steve’s style so enduring.

Our goal was never to create replicas. It was to take that essence - the understated confidence, the timelessness - and create pieces that would feel just as at home today as they did then.

The result is a collection we’re truly proud of. From the Sunracer Sweater to the Bonner Jeans and the crisp Jake Tee, every garment has been designed to honour Steve’s signature look.

We worked with the best fabrics, focused on the weight and feel of each piece, and made sure every detail had a reason to be there. Nothing is over-designed or over-worked. It’s raw, it’s authentic - just as we believe Steve would have wanted.

This collaboration has meant so much to us because it’s about more than clothing. It’s about paying respect to someone who defined a way of dressing that still feels relevant today. Steve’s style wasn’t about making a statement for the sake of it. It was about confidence without arrogance, simplicity without compromise. That’s what we’ve tried to capture in every stitch.

Working with the McQueen estate and Steve’s family has been a privilege. We’re grateful for their trust, their stories, and their passion for preserving a legacy that continues to inspire generations. We hope that when you wear these pieces, you feel a little of that spirit - and make them your own.

This collection is for those who go their own way. Just like Steve did.
