A Year of Enduring Style: The &SONS Capsule Wardrobe Wearer Trial

Written by Olaus McLeod

Welcome to "A Year of Enduring Style," a journey I'm so excited to be embarking on, in collaboration with &SONS. For 365 days, I am dedicating myself to a wearer trial of a carefully curated capsule wardrobe composed almost entirely of &SONS garments. This project is more than just about clothing – it's a deep dive into the philosophy of slow fashion, a commitment to buying less, buying better and an exploration of true minimalism. Over the coming year, I'll be rigorously assessing the wearability, durability, washability, and versatility of each piece, sharing my honest experiences and insights.

In a world saturated with fast fashion, the concept of investing in fewer, higher-quality garments that stand the test of time is more important than ever. &SONS, with its dedication to timeless design and robust construction, embodies this ethos perfectly. This trial isn't just about reviewing clothes – it's about proving that a well-chosen, compact wardrobe can not only meet all your needs but will also enhance your personal style with enduring quality.

Let's take a closer look at the foundational pieces that will accompany me on this year-long sartorial adventure:

The New Elder Henley Shirt (Raw & Black)

When I pull on one of these Henleys, I immediately feel that authentic, soft touch of organic cotton. They're my go-to for comfort, whether I'm wearing them on their own for a laid-back look or layering them under a shirt, a waistcoat or a chore jacket for extra warmth. The three-button neck looks and feels classic, and I love knowing they're easy to care for – a cool wash and they're good to go, no fuss.

Base Waffle Crew Neck (Navy & Grey Marl)

These crew necks feel incredibly substantial and well-made as soon as you put them on. The waffle knit gives them a nice texture, and they fit really well – tailored enough to look smart but still super comfortable. They're perfect for layering up when the weather turns, and I really look forward to wearing them in the cooler months.

Boxer Pocket T-Shirt (Grey Marl & Black)

These T-shirts are simply the best kind of everyday essential. They're soft against my skin thanks to the organic cotton, and they feel like they'll really last. The fit is just right – not too tight, not too baggy – and the chest pocket adds a nice touch. I know these will be in constant rotation.

Breton Stripe T-shirt (Blue)

There's something effortlessly cool about this Breton stripe tee. It's got that classic 1950s cut that just feels right, and the 'slub' organic cotton gives it a unique texture. It's the kind of shirt you can throw on and instantly look put-together and comfortable.

Brandon Overdyed Jean Black Fade

These jeans are going to be my absolute
workhorses. The black wash with that subtle fade already looks great, and the perfectly slim fit means they'll be comfortable all day, every day. I'm excited to see how they wear in over the year and how well that black fade holds up to countless washes.

Hemingway Trousers Midnight Blue

Slip into these, and you instantly feel a blend of history and comfort. They're so lightweight and comfortable, making them incredibly versatile. I can easily see myself wearing them casually or dressing them up a bit. The waist cinches mean I can always get the perfect fit, and I appreciate that they seem like they'll be quick to wash and dry.

Virgil Chino Shorts Navy

In the current Summer weather, these are my go-to bottoms. They've got that classic chino look, feel incredibly easy to wear, and I know they'll pair with pretty much anything in my wardrobe. They're the epitome of effortless Summer style.

McQueen Chuck Track Pant Grey Marl

These are something extra-special, part of an incredibly rare collaboration between &SONS and the Steve McQueen Estate. There's a real sense of history when I pull on these joggers, knowing they're inspired by Steve McQueen's own style. They're incredibly comfortable thanks to that substantial fleece, but they don't feel sloppy. The deep waistband and pockets are really practical, and the subtle McQueen embroidery is a cool, understated detail. These are built for comfort and will definitely be my choice for relaxed days.

Track Cut-Off Shorts Grey Marl

These shorts feel ready for anything. The heavyweight fleece is super comfortable, and I appreciate the raw-edge hem that’s securely stitched – it shows they're made to last, even with active wear. The elasticated waist and drawcord mean a perfect fit every time, whether I'm training or just lounging. I wear these every day for my workouts and runs and they’re just perfect.

Drifter Wool Waistcoat Grey

This waistcoat adds a fantastic layer of warmth and a touch of refined style. It feels incredibly soft, and those vintage-style buttons really elevate the look. It's definitely a piece I'll reach for when I want to add some character to an outfit and I look forward to buttoning it up on cooler days.

Off Black Sweatshirt

This sweatshirt feels like it's bulletproof – built to last a lifetime. The heavyweight organic cotton is incredibly comfortable, and the washed finish gives it that perfectly worn-in feel from day one. I love the simple, robust design – it's an absolute workhorse and is going to be a staple of mine for years to come.

Boulder Shirt Grey

I know this overshirt will become a favourite for those cooler days. It's got a really soft feel thanks to the wool blend and it layers perfectly over a T-shirt or Henley. The natural tones and simple design make it incredibly versatile. I will definitely look forward to cosying into it after my cold water dips.

Black Gold Waxed Jacket

What a beast! This jacket just feels like heritage. When you pick it up, it feels bombproof and heavy! The British Millerain waxed fabric instantly tells me it's ready for any weather, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how that wax develops its own unique character over time. This is a jacket that feels like it will only get better with age and wear. I can’t wait to document this process.

Carver Jacket Green

This is my go-to everyday jacket, an absolute staple of the &SONS collection and one of the first pieces that &SONS’ founder, Phil James designed. The heavy cotton twill feels incredibly durable, and all the pockets are genuinely useful. It's a jacket that feels like it can handle anything I throw at it, making it perfect for daily wear, layering, dressing up and dressing down. I love it!

Thompson Baker Boy Hat Grey Herringbone

There's something so classic and distinctive about this Baker Boy hat. The Harris Tweed feels authentic, high quality and extra special for me as my ancestors are from Harris! It's clear that it's been made with great care in the UK. It adds a really sharp, timeless touch to any outfit.

&SONS Baseball Cap Dark Grey

This is a solid, well-made baseball cap. The oiled cotton feels durable, and the adjustable brass buckle means it's always going to fit perfectly. It’s a versatile staple for casual days, simple and effective – another absolute go-to.
