The Boardwalk Peacoat: A Timeless Tale of Style and Functionality
From the High Seas to the High Street: A Journey Through Time
The history of the peacoat is a fascinating journey, from its humble beginnings to becoming a wardrobe staple for many. Originally crafted by the Dutch in the early 1800s, it was known as the 'pijjekker,' distinguished by its coarse woollen fabric.
Interestingly, it was the British who played a pivotal role in popularising this naval masterpiece as part of their uniform. As the peacoat crossed the Atlantic, the US Navy integrated it into their attire, swiftly embraced by the brave "reefers." This attests to the coat's versatility, as reefers were the daring individuals who scaled the towering rigging of sailing ships, confronting harsh winds and rain.
The peacoat's success over the decades is a testament to its perfect blend of form and function. Its high collars, double-breasted fastening, and mid-length cut enabled sailors to navigate their ships comfortably while carrying out their duties.

The Beauty Lies in the Details
Drawing inspiration from the earliest 'pijjekker' designs, we embarked on a journey to perfect the sartorial silhouette of the peacoat. This endeavour led us to explore innovative fabrics and techniques to create a contemporary version of this iconic jacket.
Our commitment to sustainability led us to discover a lining fabric made from beech tree cellulose, significantly reducing water usage during production. We extensively researched recycled fabrics and hardware to enhance the sustainability of our new design.
From the 22oz Melton wool woven exclusively for &SONS to the oversized buttons crafted from recycled metal, every detail has been consciously sourced without compromise.
To withstand the elements and ensure wearability and practicality, we incorporated Modal, a luxury textile derived from beech tree pulp, into the lining. Modal contains 50% more absorbent microfibers than cotton, making it both sustainable and eco-friendly. Furthermore, the wool used is recycled from old garments, repurposed and spun into new yarn, reducing waste and environmental impact.
The Boardwalk Peacoat is an iconic addition to any &SONS wardrobe and a favourite among Pioneers. Its classic silhouette remains unparalleled. This season, we proudly present the Boardwalk Peacoat in Army Green, retaining all the beloved details that make it a true masterpiece.
Storm Collar: Protection and Style Unite
We've designed the collar's height to shield wearers from the elements, introducing a traditional fastening that snugly pulls the collar around the neck for added insulation. This fastening can be easily removed or repositioned around the back when not in use. Thanks to the heavy-weight 22oz Melton wool, the collar stands proudly when worn up, creating a distinctive silhouette.
How to Wear the Boardwalk Peacoat
Layer up with our long-sleeve Raw Henley and our lightweight Crafter chore, perfect for the Autumn season. Finish your look with our sturdy leather boots and complete it with a warm watch cap.
With the same commitment to quality and sustainability, we've meticulously crafted this new rendition, ensuring every detail is sourced consciously, without compromise.
The peacoat's rich history, attention to detail, and timeless style make it an enduring piece in our collection. Whether you're braving the high seas or strolling down the high street, the peacoat is the ultimate outer layer that combines style and functionality seamlessly.
